Young Drivers

The Center for Transportation Safety brings a unique perspective to training young drivers. Our simulators are excellent tools that allow the young driver to become familiar with the operation of a vehicle, the rules of the road, speed and space management, and defensive driving. The simulator can also place the young driver in more difficult traffic conditions, emergency situations, and adverse weather.

Our program supports the behind-the-wheel experience a young driver's parent can deliver. The Center for Transportation Safety places a young driver behind the wheel of a simulator for two hours. As the driver becomes familiar with the operation of the vehicle, the CTS program adds additional traffic.

After the first simulation experience, the young driver is required to complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driving online course, after which the young driver returns for two more hours of simulator time. This second simulation exposes the driver to more traffic, poor weather conditions, slick roads, and emergency situations (oncoming traffic crossing centerline, soft shoulders, blown front tire, abrupt traffic stopping, etc.).
